The Challenge

CitySprint’s mobile computers were ageing – breakages and downtime were becoming more frequent, and the GPRS connection was no longer fit-for purpose for the demands of their customers. They needed to find a suitable upgrade that would incorporate 4G connectivity to give them industry leading coverage and speed. The devices needed to be rugged, support their bespoke electronic proof of delivery system and be able to work in all conditions that a courier needs to. City Sprint wanted to replace their old CityTrakker devices (MC5574s and MC7596s – by Motorola) and upgrade from ageing GPRS connected devices to newer and more reliable 4G devices. Before meeting with Symec Technologies, Kevin Wong, from City Sprint, already knew what he needed to achieve. However, with a diverse range of options available it wasn’t clear what would answer these needs.

Our Solution

Symec were elected by City Sprint as the partner of choice, and over the course of 18 months, starting by understanding the core requirements of the users and the existing systems that would need to be supported. A short consultation period then saw the companies look at a number of possible approaches including both consumer and rugged. It soon became clear that the most suitable response would be Zebra’s MC67 rugged mobile computer. Symec began rolling these out to couriers whilst re-purchasing the now obsolete devices. Almost all 3,000 City Sprint couriers have had their upgraded device, and already the project is a great success with the control room and couriers now being able to better communicate, leading to further increase City Sprints client satisfaction.

The Result

Symec staged and pre-configured all devices on behalf of City Sprint so that they were ready for immediate use as they landed with each user. There’s no time to waste in the same day delivery network so each MC67 had to simply work out the box.CitySprint’s continued growth is great news for Symec as a sole mobility partner
